Popis | Cytogenetics of the crop Brassica species will soon celebrate 100 years of history. Although the objectives of cytogenetic studies have changed in the course of time, the fi eld is experiencing a renaissance with the advent of new techniques (multicolor fl uorescence in situ hybridization, chromosome painting) and due to expanding genomic resources (large-insert DNA libraries, sequence data). Moreover, cytogenomics of Brassicas benefit to a great extent from a variety of genomic tools, resources, and the outstanding genome annotation developed for Arabidopsis thaliana. In this chapter we present a brief account of the most signifi cant achievements in Brassica cytogenetics and review the latest fi ndings of the genome evolution in Brassica crop species. We summarize fundamental facts of the genome composition, homeologous chromosome pairing, chromosome identifi cation, and chromosome localization and evolutionary dynamics of dispersed and satellite repeats in diploid and allopolyploid Brassica genomes. |
