Queering Shakespeare on Czech Stages in Recent Years

| Popis | The paper will address several recent Czech productions of Shakespeare’s works that incorporate – or are entirely based on – queer aesthetics. While the “queering” of Shakespeare has been a commonplace in anglophone cultures roughly since the 1980s, mainstream Czech theatre culture has only recently employed queer elements in Shakespearean productions. Examples might be Michal Lang’s all-male The Taming of the Shrew (2021), David Jařab’s Macbeth – Too Much Blood (2017) or Michal Hába’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2022). The paper will contrast and compare the individual directors’ and dramaturges’ strategies and will seek to define what “queer dramaturgy” means for Czech audiences. |
