Popis The presentation will briefly outline the impact of Restoration theatre in Czech culture since the 20th century. Historically, English Restoration theatre has always been somewhat overshadowed by English Renaissance theatre in the eyes of Czech researchers, theatre practitioners and members of theatregoing and reading audiences. While about a dozen of Restoration plays were translated and staged in the 20th century (sadly, excluding the works of Aphra Behn) and survey chapters on Restoration drama have appeared in Czech volumes on the history of English literature and theatre (including the translations of Hardin Craig’s A History of English Literature and Oscar Brockett’s History of Theatre), until recently, no systematic interest in this period had existed in the Czech environment. This was the reason why a broader team, lead by the author of this presentation, decided to start a project in 2019, whose result will be a representative three-volume anthology of Restoration dramatic works in Czech – perhaps the first endeavour of its kind and scope in a non-anglophone culture. The presentation will outline the conceptual and editorial decisions of the authors, the strategies of the translators, as well as the collaborative character of the project (which included cooperation with theatre practitioners, whose role was pivotal during the process). We believe that our methods and approach can easily be duplicated and inspire similar projects in other countries and literary and theatre cultures.
