Although this perception is only true to a limited extent, there is no question that the school policy of Red Vienna on the one hand and the Christian Social-dominated federal states and (partially) the state education administration on the other hand were in clear opposition to each other. The term 'school-political dualism' was coined for this contrast. In my presentation, important school reform projects, the beginnings of their implementation in Red Vienna, central areas of conflict in the debate about school reform and the positions of their political opponents will be presented. Following this, some fundamental questions about the school-political dualism of the interwar period are addressed. Firstly, the role played by the intertwining of pedagogical and socio-political discourses in this context will be discussed; secondly, the implications of school policy dualism, which both set limits and created opportunities for school reform; and thirdly, it is pointed out that the clarification of the question of how permeable or dense the border was in detail, which the school-political dualism drew between Vienna and the rest of Austria, represents an open research desideratum. |
