Popis | Airports are often being described as flow machines designed to process and control mobility, as nodes of global transport networks, as spaces of mere transit, as non-places that could be anywhere. Similarly as shopping malls, they are perceived as symbols of modernity, sometimes even being referred to as cities of the future, the new urban forms. This fascinating view (in positive or negative terms) of what airports symbolize and represent is in great contrast with everyday experiences of travellers, airline employees, service workers and increasingly present homeless people at many big airports. We will apply the concept of place and home to point out these meaningful relationships that people often have towards certain terminals, halls and lounges at the airport, particularly when frequently even routinely visited. To better understand the experience of our target group the author decided to live at London Heathrow airport for a period of four weeks, where she conducted series of participatory observations while simultaneously trying to live there. The everyday reality and interaction with the spaces and the logic of the airport – from sleeping at the benches, security controls, to dwelling in the business lounges – has enabled her to look at the various identities and at the process of place-becoming itself. Thus, the aim of this paper is to discuss the results of these observations and the author’s own experience with the life at the airport and with the (auto)ethnographic research methods. |
