Popis European cohesion policy aims to achieve joint development and economic growth of all regions. Endogenous approach based on using internal resources and potential is seen as the best way for attainment of regional growth. At the present time there is a com mon agreement that innovations represent the main driving force for development because they provide significant competitive advantage based on tacit knowledge. Rural areas are generally seen as problem regions with small potential for growth. Although the re are several policies providing special support for rural regions, they are often overlooked in national development strategies. It is also generally believed that rural regions can hardly innovate because they are lacking needed infrastructure – univers ities, research organizations, networks of high - tech enterprises. Is it really truth that rural areas are not capable of creating innovations? The aim of this paper is to discuss various views on rural innovations in current literature. Using several case studies this paper shows that rural regions have potential both for innovations and growth. Rural innovation process however differs from innovation process in urban areas and according to the special form of rural innovations we must shape the supporting policy.
