It has been obvious that human activity substantially affects the environment for some time. Whether by constantly creating new sources of pollution, deforestation caused by expanding agriculture and human settlements due to population growth, the impact of economic activity in particular on the environment is not negligible. However, the relationship between human activity and the environment goes both ways. Pollution, rise of temperature and sea levels, damage to biodiversity and depletion of natural resources can in turn also impact economic outcomes such as human capital accumulation (Black et al., (2007); Zivin and Neidell, (2013)), lost output (Pandey et al., (2021)), health (Currie, Neidell, and Schmieder, (2009); Currie et al., (2014); Greenstone and Hanna, (2014); Newell et al., (2018)), human well-being or migration (Bohra-Mishra, Oppenheimer, and Hsiang, (2014)).
This project will be composed of three separate research papers in the field of environmental economics and an additional work on a paper that is already in progress. Each of the three papers will focus on the impact of air pollution on various outcomes (voting behaviour, willingness to vaccinate, etc.) on regional level and use pollution either as a treatment or as an instrument.
