We often selectively regulate our emotions or strategically manipulate the emotions of others in order to influence the outcome of a given situation. On the other hand, we also often disregard the emotional impact of our decisions on others to our detriment. I plan to complete an ongoing project that studies the neural correlates of two different emotion regulation strategies in the context of distinct positive and negative emotions. From insights gained through this study about the relative efficacy of different strategies, I then plan to explore how and in which contexts behavioral outcomes can be influenced through conscious and effortful regulation. In addition, I plan to implement a larger lab experiment in which I explore how another's expectations of one's performance can change how one actually performs. This might provide evidence of negative outcomes that result from disregarding the emotional impact of one’s decisions in a managerial context.
