Description The article maps a specific area of intellectual property related to sugar patents: inventions, utility models, industrial designs and trademarks that are associated with sugar as raw material. The authors analyzed the database of the Industrial Property Office of the Czech Republic and evaluated 1,163 records from a publicly available application. The oldest record concerning sugar comes from the time of the AustroHungarian monarchy, the last records are from 2020. Therefore, this period was divided according to significant political events into three periods, 1908 – 1939, 1945 – 1989 and 1990 – 2020. In these periods, they examined from which countries the inventions were filed and what was the ratio compared to the patents filed from the Czech lands (Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic). It was found that the ratio of Czech patents was in majority until 1989 and decreased significantly in the period after 1990. Most patents are filed from the USA, Italy, France and the United Kingdom. At the same time, the authors document that the number of innovations (patents, utility and industrial designs) is also on the decline, while the importance of trademarks increases. It shows a small support for innovation in industries that process sugar as raw material.
