Description At first data concerning the occurrence of depression in schizophrenia, primarily focused on first-episode schizophrenia, are summarized. The presence of depression in schizophrenia is associated with a worse course and prognosis and increased risk of suicidal behaviour, therefore an early treatment is important. Antipsychotics of the first generation are associated with the development of depression, on the other site antipsychotics of the second generation may have a direct antidepressant activity. The further treatment strategy for depressive symptoms in schizophrenia includes antipsychotics augmentation with antidepressants. The available studies show that after the acute phase this approach is successful with minimal risk for development of psychotic symptoms.
