Description Regarding the current use of the polycarbonate based materials in different industries we succeeded in depositing thin transparent films on these surfaces, using a capacitively-coupled radio-frequency discharge. The films are obtained from controlled ratios of mixtures between hexamethyldisiloxane with nitrogen and hexamethyldisilazane with nitrogen and/or hydrogen on the polycarbonate substrates, by varying the discharge parameters and the gas flow rates we constructed multifunctional layered coatings. Using optical emission spectroscopy (OES) we performed several plasma diagnostics. Analyzing the obtained coatings by depth sensing indentation method, contact angle measurements, surface energy calculation, SEM (scanning electron microscopy), ellipsometry and spectrophotometry in order to determine the properties and functionality (hardness, fracture toughness, adhesion, internal stress, abrasion resistance, thickness, color, refractive index) of the obtained structures. The behavior of the coatings covers a wide range of material properties from inorganic to polymer-like coatings. Having a high resistance to outdoor weathering and UV exposure, the hard, transparent multilayered polymer coatings seem to be very suitable at covering for example the headlights in the automobile industry or houses windows.
