Description Breast cancer is the most common women cancer in the world. Traditional prognostic markers are, however, not sufficient for precise risk-group discrimination. Our effort has been focused on biomarker discovery in the set of 96 breast cancer primary tumors divided into several groups according to grade, lymph node and hormonal receptor status. Three proteomics approaches were involved in complex protein analysis of tissue lysates: SELDI-TOF MS, iTRAQ-2DLC-MS/MS and 2-D SDS-PAGE. Generally, our results indicate the following differences between the two studied groups: Differential expression of (i) cytoskeletal proteins, (ii) AGR family members and (iii) proteins involved in heme biosynthesis. These findings provide a solid data for further verification, functional studies and validation geared toward the establishment of novel biomarkers of metastatic processes in breast cancer.
