Description The aim of this study was to compare two methods for the species identification. 175 strains of lactobacilli isolated from milk and meat products (n = 139) were identified by genotypic and chemotaxonomic methods: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Using the PCR method strains were differentiated into 10 species and into 16 species by MALDI-TOF MS. The total agreement of both methods has been observed in five species (L. curvatus, L. delbrueckii, L. johnsonii, L. plantarum a L. sakei).
