Description During a survey of the monogeneans parasites of freshwater fishes from Senegal (West Africa) and Kenya (East Africa) 121 specimens of following eight species of cichlid fishes (Cichlidae) were examined: Hemichromis fasciatus, Hemichromis letournaeuxi, Oreochromis niloticus, Sarotherodon galilaeus, Tilapia dageti, Tilapia guineensis, Tilapia zillii and Tylochromis intermedius. The Gyrodactylus parasites were found on four host species studied. Gyrodactylus cichlidarum Paperna, 1969 was identified from H. fasciatus. New Gyrodactylus species, Gyrodactylus ergensi, was described from S. galilaeus and O. niloticus collected in Senegal. This species was also recorded on S. galilaeus from Kenya. However Gyrodactylus sp. collected from O. niloticus in Kenya have been found to be different and based on the results of morphometrical analysis could be regarded as another new species. An 793bp fragment of ITS1, ITS2 and 5.8S of G. ergensi n. sp. was obtained and has shown a close similarities with G. cichlidarum. These findings represent the first records of Gyrodactylus species in Senegal as well in Kenya.
