Citation
Description SMC complexes (Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes)contribute to organization and maintenance of chromatin structure. SMC1/3 cohesin complex holds sister chromatids untill the onset of anaphase. Condensin complex is essential for condensing intephase chromosomes prior a mitosis. The third SMC5/6 complex is multifunctional - participates in e.g. DNA repair. SMC5/6 contains the most subunits: e.g. Nse2 is a SUMO ligase and Nse3 subunit is a funding member of MAGE (melanoma antigen) family of proteins. More then 50 genes (and/or pseudogenes) comprise the MAGE superfamily in human genome. Most of them are expressed in specific cancer/testis manner. Although a little is known about their function all available data indicate their important role in regulation of cellular processes and cancer genesis.
