Description The paper dealt with using the successive removal method at two different sites (mountain brook and small lowland river). We aimed to assess the optimal effort to obtaining sufficient information about fish assemblage (species richness, assemblage composition, abundance) at these two types of sites. We estimated abundances of both the whole assemblages and individual species via Leslie-Davis method. We also assessed the time consumption. At the mountain brook, one run is sufficient for obtaining assemblage structure. At the small lowland river two runs are sufficient for obtaining the assemblage structure. Three and more runs are necesarry for population estimates and for assemblage estimates at sites with less catchable species.
