Description During a survey of the monogenean parasites of freshwater fishes from the Niokolo Koba National Park (Senegal, the following species of characid fishes were examined: Alestidae (Alestes baremoze, Brycinus leuciscus, Brycinus nurse, Hydrocynus brevis, Rhabdalestes septentrionalis), Citharinidae (Citharinus citharus, Distichodus rostratus, Nanocharax ansorgii, Paradistichodus dimidiatus), and Hepsetidae (Hepsetus odoe). Fishes were caught by gill-nets and sink-nets in the Gambia River and its basins. Monogeneans found on the gills of freshly killed fish were fixed in a mixture of glycerine and ammonium-picrate. Morpho-metrical characteristics of the hard haptoral structures and the copulatory organ were taken using a light microscope equipped with phase contrast optics and digital image analysis. The following species of monogeneans (Dactylogyridae: Ancyrocephalinae) belonging to four genera (i.e. Afrocleidodiscus, Annulotrema, Characidotrema and Nanotrema) were found: Annulotrema elongata Paperna & Thurston from Alestes baremoze; Afrocleidodiscus sp., Annulotrema nili ruahae Paperna, Annulotrema pikei (Price, Peebles & Bamford, 1969) and Annulotrema sp. from Hydrocynus brevis; Annulotrema robusta Paperna, Characidotrema nursei Ergens from Brycinus leuciscus, Annulotrema alestesnursi Paperna, Annulotrema delta Paperna, Annulotrema sp., Characidotrema brevipenis Paperna, Characidotrema zelotes Kritsky, Kulo & Boeger from Brycinus nurse; Annulotrema sp. from Rhabdalestes septentrionalis; Annulotrema biaensis NDouba, Pariselle & Euzet, Annulotrema hepseti Paperna & Thurston from Hepsetus odoe; Nanotrema citharini Paperna, Nanotrema sp. from Citharinus citharus.
