Description | Nested PCR detecting tmpC and polA genes was employed to discover 40 PCR positive samples from 27 patients including 2 newborns. Out of total 73 lesion swabs, 22 was PCR positive (coming from 16 patients). Among 46 whole blood samples, 16 were PCR positive (from 15 patients). 4 samples were PCR positive in 2 newborns with congenital syphilis. One newborn was PCR positive in the sample of whole blood and the second one was PCR positive in serum, lesion swab and cerebrospinal fluid. In 22 out of 40 samples containing treponemal DNA, typing of at least one of two loci (TP0136 or TP0548) was succesful and 6 unique sequences were discovered. Remaining 16 samples showed sequences identical to SS14 strain. There was complete concordance of multiple samples collected from the same patient where applicable. |
