Description | The aim of the paper is to proceed in the direction towards posing the question of the role and significance of mathematics for economic theory. The nature of the problem is demonstrated on the case of Agent-based computational economics (ACE) -- a recent example of employment of mathematical modelling in economic theorising. The question of the role and significance of mathematics for economic theory seems to have two layers. First is the general question of mathematics as a language of scientific discourse, second is the question of relevance of mathematics as a description of reality. Both layers are further complicated by the fact that people form part of the economic system. |
