Description The article discusses the origins and ancient developments of the genre of figured poetry; the main focus is on the collection of thirty one poems composed by Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius, a fourth-century Roman author of African origin. His poetry is analyzed from a number of perspectives, including structuralist theory of language and reception aesthetics.
