Description Our research follows up to Mgr. Šárka Portešová, PhD`s long-running research of personal, social and emotional characteristics of gifted children. The object of our research is the social status of intellectually gifted children in a small social group – a class. The research was carried out in a sample of 400 children from two primary schools at the age of 7 - 15. We identified 24 highly gifted children. The acquirement of 97th percentile in the Raven`s test of intelligence (CPM, SPM) was the identifying criterion. We also asked teachers for labeling highly gifted children. We used Hrabal`s Sociometric – rating questionnaire and Braun`s questionnaires B3 and B4 to detect the gifted children`s social status in the class. We borrowed a technique called „Circles“ from a school psychologist A. Vašáková to finding a social status of the youngest children in the sample. We found out that gifted children often reach the extreme status in their classes – there are class stars (30%) who create the center of the group, they are popular, favourite and accepted individuals, further there are pupils accepted by their class in general because of their altruism, empathy and prosocial behavior (another 5%). But there are also pupils who are refused, unpopular, social maladapted or with a handicap (25%). 40 % of the gifted reach the äverage status in the class. In our next research we would like to focus on a specific group of gifted children with a handicap called „twice exceptional“ children.
