Description Whole genome fingerprinting was used to compare four treponemal strains including Nichols and SS14 (T. p. pallidum), Samoan D (T. p. pertenue) and Cuniculi A (T. paraluiscuniculi). T. p. pallidum is the causative agent of sexually transmitted syphilis, T. p. pertenue causes endemic non-venereal treponemal infections and T. paraluiscuniculi is the etiologic agent of venereal syphilis in rabbits and does not infect humans. The different degrees of invasivity and pathogenicity of these strains should correspond to the differences in their genomes. The genomes of analysed strains were divided into 97 overlapping intervals covering the whole genome and each of these segments was amplified and digested by restriction enzymes BamH I, EcoR I and Hind III. The genome differences are preferentially localized in the vicinity of tpr genes.
