Description A boundary between aquatic and terrestrial species of Sciomyzidae is continuous because the larvae can attack terrestrial as well as aquatic snails. Adults are relatively well known but also immature stages can be distinguished in many species. The predaceous or partly parasitoid mode of life of numerous larvae has been studied in detail although the biology of some native species still remains unknown. Virtually all limnic species or those in which a development in water is presumed have been treated. This summary of the actual knowledge may be of interest for limnologists and all those interesting in ecological role of these flies in aquatic ecosystems.
