Description Paradiplozoon homoion (Monogenea: Diplozoidae), documented from a wide range of carp fishes, ranks as a true generalist. Previous studies have revealed that, within its range of distribution, this species exhibits uniformity in commonly used genetic markers for diplozoids (i.e. ITS2 and 28S rDNA). However, the intraspecific genetic structure has not yet been examined using variable genetic markers commonly used in population genetic studies or barcoding (e.g. mitochondrial genes). In our research, we studied genetic variability in P. homoion in 11 western Palearctic countries, where we observed substantial genetic differentiation in the gene encoding cytochrome c oxidase I (COI). The spatial distribution of mtDNA haplotypes showed a strong geographic association and this finding might have particular implications for the mating pattern, as it can be assumed that fusion of juvenile stages during ontogenesis can require some degree of genetic compatibility.
