Description | Technology has long been the subject of controversy. On the one hand, they are seen as a universal good that we all love and use; on the other hand, there are many voices pointing to their negative potential to exclude whole groups of people from society, bringing us stress and unwanted surveillance over our lives. This paper considers how, in the context of an ageing population, the implications of these conflicting attitudes for the use of technology by male and female users in older age can be reconciled. We will discuss the future as a place and time where technology and ageing meet on a daily basis through appropriately set policies and what the results of current research on technology in the lives of seniors can do for this. From a sociological point of view, we will try to discern what factors are involved in the formation of these conflicting attitudes and what aspects could contribute to their mutual reconciliation. |
