Web Report
Description In this research report, we present findings on situations when adolescents met in person with someone they had initially encountered on the internet. The results are based on a survey of a representative sample of 2,500 Czech households conducted in June 2021. The report provides detailed information on key aspects of these face-to-face meetings, such as how common these meetings are, adolescents’ motives for attending them, whom did adolescents meet, to what extent these individuals met adolescents’ expectations, how pleasant or unpleasant the meetings were, how threatened the adolescents felt during the meetings, and whether they remained in contact with the person after the face-to-face meeting. We also describe differences between boys and girls, younger and older adolescents, and meetings with individuals of the same or opposite gender. The presented findings offer an empirical context for discussions on the safety of meeting new people online. They are particularly relevant for parents of adolescents, educators, professionals in the field of online risk prevention, and researchers.
