Description The experimental approach is an essential tool of cellular electrophysiology for studying the arrhythmogenic potential of drugs. However, to fully understand the arrhythmogenic effect of a selected pharmaceutical, time-consuming and often difficult to perform experimental data acquisition under heterogeneous conditions is a limiting factor of research. For these reasons, a wide variety of cellular models have been developed, detailing membrane electrophysiological events, which can be used to further explain the experimentally captured effects of a pharmaceutical. Changes in ion channel behavior under the influence of the pharmacokinetics can then be further extrapolated to cardiomyocyte models from other cardiac compartments or even other species, which will substantially refine and complement the classical experimental approach. As an example, we present the elucidation of the arrhythmogenic effect of aminophylline, which is known in clinical practice as a bronchodilator capable of inducing undesirable atrial fibrillation.
