Description Giardia lamblia, a parasitic agent causing acute and chronic diarrhea both in children and adults, is named after a Czech physician and scientist Vilém Dušan Lambl who first described its morphological characteristics. Giardiasis is a widespread disease, its incidence is significantly higher in low-income countries. An infected individual sheds this pathogen in the feces in the form of a cyst that is resistant to environmental conditions. The parasites are then spread through contaminated water, food, soil, or direct contact and cause a variety of clinical manifestations after the cyst develops into an active form, trophozoite, in the intestine of a host.
