Description Trifolium is an agriculturally important genus of the family Fabaceae. It shows considerable karyotype variability and includes both aneuploid and polyploid species. Polyploid zigzag clover (T. medium) is closely related to high-quality fodder crop red clover (T. pratense) and hypothesis of its allopolyploid origin was proposed. This study was focused on further karyotype and sequence analyses of zigzag clover and its related species in search of its origin. Distribution of zigzag clover specific repetitive elements was analysed by fluorescence in situ comparative mapping in related species and sequencing data were examined by RepeatExplorer Graph clustering analysis. Based on proposed results, hypothesis of its autopolyploid origin was suggested.
