Citation
Description The book chapter is concerned with the role of rules in exploitation and exploration processes, showing how rules and background knowledge about those rules enables coping with surprise. The chapter has implications for the area of management training and education, suggesting that a rigorous education concerning rules and especially the reasons for why those rules exist and when they should be followed may lead to exaptation. The chapter contains qualitative research focussed on a unique setting, generates new ideas in the area of skill development and theory of routines, and highlights areas suitable for further research.
