Description Species diversity, distribution and evolutionary history of host-specific parasites is usually linked with the historical dispersion, diversity and evolution of their hosts. Over years 2014-2017 we collected 72 Dactylogyrus species (11 potentially new for science) from 46 localities in Balkan and Apennine Peninsulas. In total, 71 cyprinid species were dissected and parasitologically processed. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on partial sequences of 18S and 28S rDNA divided species into 4 evolutionary lineages and revealed multiple origin of endemic Dactylogyrus. By application cophylogenetic methods we revealed significant coevolutionary signal between cyprinid genera Aulopyge, Barbus and Luciobarbus and their respective Dactylogyrus.
