Description | Apis mellifera is one of the most important pollinators in the Czech Republic and is also a source of many important natural products. Like other species of insects, bees have a well developed innate immune system composed of cellular and humoral immunity, which is additionally supplemented with social immunity in bees. Only optimally stocked and immune-competent colonies can easily survive the winter. Between 2016 and 2018, we carry out regular monthly sampling of selected beehives, assessing their development, and taking hemolymph for laboratory analyzes of immune and physiological parameters. The results of the measurements show that there are significant changes in the concentration of the vitellogenin storage protein and the total protein levels, both of which increase in the autumn months. In winter bees, higher antimicrobial activity was also detected, which seems to compensate for the observed decrease in hemocyte counts and hence for a decrease in cellular immunity. The parameters described can help to assess the health status of the colony in pre-wintering and determine the likelihood of a successful overwintering of the winter season.
