Description This paper is devoted to the problem of expressive functioning of Russian quantitative Aktionsarten in speech, oral and written (social networks), i.e. cases when they can serve as a means of expressing personal appreciation / depreciation. The focus is on utterances with quantitative verbs naming action quantity “greater than the norm”. The research is done within the framework of Functional Grammar and Cognitive Linguistics. The expressive functioning of Russian Aktionsarten is regularly observed with verbs of quantitative-terminative Aktionsarten naming large action quantity. Speakers of Russian coin occasional Aktionsarten following the productive Russian word-building models. It is argued that it is an interplay of such factors as verb semantics, the speaker’s concepts about actions, linguistic context in its various manifestations (syntactic patterns, verb-object agreement, etc), the speaker’s attitude and the situation of communication which impact the degree of expressivity and the emotional colouring (positive/negative) of an utterance with a quantitative verb naming action quantity “greater than the norm”.
