Description The following paper deals with the performance of the governing parties in the direct presidential elections in four East-Central European countries. It tries to identify circumstances under which government parties are successful according to the Dinkel´s method of comparison of the expected and real result of these parties. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) for all government parties and for each government party individually importance of the position of elections in the electoral cycle, incumbency, ability to nominate joint candidate, position of respective party in the government and personality of the candidates are evaluated.
