Description Coplanar barrier discharge in single pair electrode configuration on Al2O3 and AlN ceramics was used to study the newly reported partial discharge preceeding the Townsend phase in helium and argon. The phenomenon was documented by high-speed camera imaging. Observation of this phenomena even on dielectric material of standard dielectric permittivity suggests, that it may be a process inherently associated with coplanar DBDs. Only its extremely low intensity prevents its detection during the routine measurements. Furthermore the pre-Townsend event was detected even in argon streamer-mechanism controlled discharge, when the filament was stabilized using point to plane electrode configuration.
