| Description | The objective of this paper is to offer readers a comprehensive overview of the approaches adopted across various scientific disciplines towards the issues related to charitable giving. The paper presents the theoretical starting points of rationality and pro-social behaviour in an effort to find answers to the core question regarding the relation between human rationality and the obviously pro-social behaviour of individuals in the society. It is based on the theoretical economics concept of homo oeconomicus and its interconnection with the theory of pro-social behaviour, specifically altruism. The perception of altruism is significantly influenced by the approach we adopt when thinking of it. All the approaches have in common that they seek the underpinning motivations for altruistic actions and the efforts to define what individuals can obtain in exchange for their behaviour so that such a behaviour could still be termed altruistic. The paper offers the answers that various approaches have to the key question posed by economists about what stands behind the charitable giving behaviour. Can such a behaviour be interpreted by means of economic models? Is such a behaviour consistent with the neoclassical economics? |
