Description Drug addiction is a serious medical and psychosocial problem which leads to organic harm of the body as well as distortion of the normal functioning of affected persons within the society and family. There is a large body of clinical evidence suggesting differential characteristics of the disorder in men and women. Despite the absolute number of female drug abusers is lower than the male ones, women usually show higher escalation rate, more frequent relapses and more difficulties when discontinuing the drug use. These gender specific differences will require specific treatment strategies for men and women in the near future.
