Description Since 1990s India has become one of the fastest growing economies of the world. Economic growth, which is creating new opportunities as well as conflicts, has deep effects on Indian society. Critical interpretation of social consequences of the fast economic growth has been the main objective of the book. Changes in differences between social groups such as middle class, people in poverty, dalits or adivasis, and changes in differences among Indian regions (States), are the common issues integrating individual chapters of the book. The book is concerned mainly with the period since the beginning of the economic reforms in 1991. Individual chapters provide a discussion of topics such as economic policy, development of poverty and inequalities, changes of social structure, demographic behaviour, changing structure and development tendencies of economic sectors, changes of political system, system of local self-government or electoral behaviour. Particular attention has been paid to environmental consequences of economic growth, and to social conflicts resulting from such consequences. The text has been inspired by analytical methods of regional geography with its stress on spatial location of processes and phenomena, but a critical interpretation has been preferred to description. The text is enriched by 64 maps, cartograms and pictures, 30 tables and 40 boxes.
