Description | Literary translations have always played a key role in the cultures of small nations. This is true both for fiction as well as scholarly literature. A special place in this respect is occupied by philosophical translations. We could take for granted that for philosophy scholars it should be a matter of course to read philosophical work in Greek, Latin, German, French, and English, but philosophy that is enclosed in a small circle of professional scholars loses its point, that is, to influence the wide context of national culture. This is why the translations of philosophical works into the languages of small nations are crucial and the bravery of those who embark on translation in order to make classical and contemporary texts accessible is praiseworthy. |
