Description Launching and diffusion of innovations pose a key element of socio-economic development and long-term competitiveness of regions. Innovation performance of regions is analysed through the concept of regional innovation systems. The aim of this article is to analyse the causes of success of well-functioning regional innovation systems. The analysis is carried out on the basis of case studies of two American regions with high innovation performance, Silicon Valley and Route 128. The main causes of their success are entrepreneurially oriented universities (especially Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology), that are considered seedbed of interesting business ideas. Also the government support realized through supporting programmes and research contracts is important. Another important element is financing by venture capital and so the investment companies play important role. The case studies confirmed that it depends also on historical development (path dependence concept) and influence of chance.
