Description The contribution compares the conceptions of economic science in the works of Albín Bráf and Carl Menger. The first part concerns the common intellectual background of these economists, which was constituted by the works of two schools, Classical political economy and German historical economics. It is pointed out that these intellectual backgrounds pushed them to solve and to try to harmonize the relationship between abstract economic theory with history and empirical method. Bráf acknowledged the influence of Menger on his solution of that relationship. The main part of the contribution is concerned with the similarities in the division of sciences into the historical, theoretical and practical subdivisions. This division is considered to apply to all realms of phenomena and also for the economic one. Both economists see in this division the particular solution of the relationship between theory and history. For both of them it is a way how to reconcile the cognition of real world by the empirical method with our abstract theories. In the end of this contribution I concentrate on their conception of economic theory, empirical regularities and exact laws.
