Description | N-Acetyl-D-mannosamine (ManNAc) is often used as a precursor in the chemical or enzymatic synthesis of the neuraminic acids found in glycolipids and glycoproteins. ManNAc is also a synthetic intermediate for a number of carbohydrate-derived families of biologically active compounds and pharmaceutical candidates. For this reason ManNAc is of keen interest to scientists around the world. The main goal of this work, because no N-Acetyl-mannosaminidase has been identified in the nature, is to produce N-acetyl-mannosaminidase via mutagenesis of beta-D-mannosidase and to apply this new enzyme in possible enzymatic synthesis of structures containing ManNAc. |
