Description This paper presents a floristic part of an ecological study of soil diatoms from urban habitats, which is conducted at the Department of Botany & Zoology of the Masaryk University under a project “Biodiversity of Central and Southern European cities: a comparative study of vascular plants, algae, cyanobacteria and molluscs“. So far 111 diatom species were identified from 84 soil samples from different urban habitats. The most frequently occurred diatom genera are Pinnularia, Hantzschia and Luticola. The cultivation on Petri dishes containing BBM medium repetitively revealed a presence of a high number of Cocconeis and Fragilaria taxa, which have been so far noted only from aquatic habitats.
