Description The issue of elderly care policy is under-researched especially in the term of its development and of gender perspective (in opposition to the childcare policy) in the Czech Republic. We are interested in the role of families (more precisely the particular members of families) in the system of elderly care policy. In this article, we try to bridge the knowledge gap that still exists in the understanding of the development of elderly care in the periods of socialism and post-socialism in the Czech Republic. The main research question is how the elderly care policies have changed during these periods from the perspective of family carers. As a main theoretical framework we employ the concept of varieties of familialism by Sigrid Leitner (2003) which enables us to classify elderly care policies considering the indicators of familialistic and de-familialistic tendencies.
