The polymorphism of genes encoding protein receptors on immune system cells plays an important role in surviving sepsis. Some of the most iportant are lipopolysacharide binding protein, bactericidal permeability increasing protein, toll-like receptors and tumor necrosis factor beta. It has been demostrated recently that some variants of these genes are frequently associated with severe infections, development of sepsis, multiorgan failure and death.
