The existence of a unique historical data on stoneflies (Plecoptera) collected between 1942 and 1960 in more than 700 sites evenly distributed throughout the Czech Republic affords the opportunity to assess the long-term changes of their taxocoenoses. The comparison of present and historical data sampled in the same sites enables to (i) analyse changes of stonefly species richness and composition, (ii) detect alternations in coexistence of species in comparable habitat types, (iii) isolate main determinants of these changes and to compare patterns on local and regional scales, (iv) evaluate changes of species distribution and requirements, and (vi) to test possible biotic homogenization of the taxocoenoses due to human impacts. These data will be also used for a compilation of all available information on patterns of species richness and distribution and on assessment of the current conservation status of individual species in the Czech Republic.
