As Dr. Bryan, who is the associate professor within the UNO School of Public Administration, says, she had never taught so many students from all over the world – literally. She guides students from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Turkey, Ghana, Pakistan, Kenya, Bangladesh, and many more. To her surprise, for many of those students, she was the first American they met in person.
Dr. Bryan was drawn to the Czech Republic to gain a better understanding of the nonprofit (NGO) sector in post-communist countries where the sector is relatively young. She used her background in one of her classes where she arranged the direct contact of her local students with the nonprofit professionals in the U.S. so they could more deeply understand some of the course topics. The students had to later reflect on this encounter.
