Interruption of studies

It is possible to interrupt the studies only in case the student has fulfilled the conditions to be enrolledin the next semester. If you apply for an interruption before the end of the period defined for changes in the enrolment of courses (see Schedule of the academic year), it is also possible to interrupt the studies for that particular running semester.

Once the period defined for changes in the enrolment of courses is over, the interruption of studies may be requested only for serious (medical or family) reasons. In this case, an attachment (e.g.a copy of a medical certificate proving serious medical reasons) must be attached to the electronic application in IS MU and delivered at the same time to your study coordinator. If your application is successful, your studies will be interrupted for the rest of the current semester plus forthe next semester.

You must successfully complete your studies in double the number of semesters of the standard length of study and the study coordinator is not obliged to monitor this fact. For this period (twice the standard length of study), both your active and interrupted studies are counted. The total interruption time must not exceed the standard length of the particular study. If you exceed twice the standard length, the study will have to be terminated.

During the first semester, you are not allowed to interrupt the studies.

Examples when study can or cannot be interrupted

  • I study in the first semester of a bachelor or a follow-up master study programme (also applies to our Bachelor's degree graduates currently in a follow-up master study programme) and I have not yet been able to meet the conditions to be enrolled in the second semester - STUDY CAN NOT BE INTERRUPTED (only on exception from SER mentioned above)
  • I study in the first semester of a bachelor or a follow-up master study programme, it is the examination period, and I have obtained the credits to be enrolled in the second semester, even though the next term enrolment has not been done- STUDY CAN BE INTERRUPTED
  • I study in a higher than the first semester of a bachelor or a follow-up master study programme, the examination period has started (e.g. for the spring semester), I have fulfilled the conditions to be enrolled in the next semester; the period for changes in the enrolment of courses has not finished yet, and I have not exceeded the maximum length of interruption of studies - STUDY CAN BE INTERRUPTED, even for one (e.g. autumn) semester
  • I study in a higher than the first semester of a bachelor or a follow-up master study programme (e.g. spring), I am duly enrolled in the current semester, the period for changes in the enrolment of courses is already over, and I have not exceeded the maximum length of interruption of studies - STUDY CAN BE INTERRUPTED ONLY IF I HAVE FULFILLED THE CONDITIONS TO BE ENROLLED IN THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER (e.g. 45 obtained credits in the previous autumn semester and no repeating course in the current semester)
  • I study in a higher semester of a bachelor or a follow-up master study programme, I am duly enrolled in the current semester (e.g. spring), the period for changes in the enrolment of courses is already over, and I have not fulfilled the conditions to be enrolled in the following semester (autumn) - STUDY CAN NOT BE INTERRUPTED (only on exception from SER mentioned above)

Application for interruption of studies

Application for interruption of studies is submitted electronically via IS MU (IS MU - Student – Document Office - Submission of new application - ESF OZS: Application for Interruption of Studies)

If there are no circumstances that would prevent the study interruption, the date of the submission of the application via Information System (IS MU) is set to the IS MU as the date of the interruption of study. You will receive a decision on the interruption of studies through the IS MU, indicating the total length of the interruption, the date and the method of re-enrolment when the interruption is over, and any further binding conditions for re-enrolment.

Consequences of the interruption of studies

From the first day of the interruption, you are going to lose the student’s status in the particular study field. In advance enough before the end of the interruption, you must declare to us your decision to continue with the active study, or ask for further interruption of studies. If you do not do so, we are obliged to terminate your studies. You can express your intention in person at your Study Coordinator or by e-mail (from an authorized mail address in IS MU). When your study is interrupted you are allowed to register courses; however, the enrolment of the courses will be done only after the study has been reactivated after the interruption.

During the interruption of study, the access to faculty electronic resources is automatically blocked (access to the Study online system, log in to computer rooms, faculty mail). After the reactivation of studies, the system will generate a new password for you - it is thus necessary to collect this new password at the Centre for Information and Communication Technologies. Accesses to IS MU as well as the university mail remain functional under the original password.

Reducing the length of the interruption of studies is possible only in exceptional cases - typically getting better. Reasons for early return after interruption need to be documented.

Interruption of studies between individual attempts of the final state examination

In case of failure at the final state exam, you are entitled toone resit of the exam. If you did not succeed at the exam and at the same time have fulfilled the conditions to be enrolled in the next semester, you must apply for enrolment if you want to be enrolled in the next semester. Otherwise, your study will be interrupted until the date of the resit of the exam.

If you did not succeed at the final state exam and did not fulfill the conditions to be enrolled in the next semester, your study will be interrupted automatically until the date of the resit of the exam. If you have already exceeded twice the standard length of study, your study will be terminated even though you would have normally had a right for the resit of the exam.
