Description The object of the present work is to investigate into the possibility of successfully adapting lean thinking principles to service companies and to the public administration sector as well, following a new approach that is known as lean office aiming at removing waste and reducing information spreading time, so that to ensure a quality service for the user. Thus, after shortly describing both the environmental context where companies are currently operating and the competitive dynamics characterising it, the present paper aims at analysing first the principles supporting the lean office approach and second, at identifying the suitable conditions for its best application; afterwards, the possible advantages resulting from its application to public and private service companies will be detected. Finally, starting from the analysis of the data collected and processed concerning some Italian service companies and public offices, the object of the present research is to assess the real applicability of the lean office approach to the above companies, through analysing their own performances, in order to assume the possibility of using it in the Czech Republic as well, aiming at streamlining bureaucracy and minimising waste in the public administration.
