Description Diuretics are among the longest-used major drug groups in hypertension treatment, having been used in the clinical practice since 1957 until now for their capacity to effectively reduce blood pressure levels. In hypertension treatment, they are primarily used in combination with other antihypertensive drugs in low doses. Increasing the dose of thiazide diuretics is not effective in terms of hypertension treatment and does not result in increased effect; on the contrary, there is accentuation of side effects. Minimizing the daily dose of diuretics is one of the main approaches in order to prevent negative metabolic consequences.
